Pharmacy shelves are lined with an abundance of non-prescription cold remedies that range from cough suppressants and expectorants to antihistamines and decongestants for relieving a stuffy nose. Warnings have been issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) against giving these types of medications to children under 6 years of age (Isbister, Prior, Kilham, 2012). Consumers are also being advised not to administer multiple medications (such as liquid acetaminophen and a decongestant) that may include the same ingredients because this can cause an overdose (Aschenbrenner, 2012). These directives have left many parents frustrated and wondering what they can do when children do get sick.
Think About This:
Why are cold and cough remedies not recommended for use with children under 6 years
What would you tell parents to do with these medications if they still have them in their cabinets
How would you respond to a parent who brings in an over-the-counter cough medicine and asks you to give it to his 3-year-old daughter
What alternative measures could you suggest that a parent use to make a child with a cold feel better
