Several times each month, the Arizona 5 o'clock news and local newspapers carry heartbreaking stories of childhood drownings. More often than not, the victim is a toddler who momentarily escapes a parent's watchful eye, wanders through an unlocked gate, and falls into a residential swimming pool. Although current regulations require new houses and pool installations to meet strict building codes, many existing homes do not have these safety featuresin place. However, pools and spas are not the only water hazards that contribute to childhood drowning.

What safety measures should be taken to protect children from drowning in residential pools or spas
