Contact a local law firm and request to speak with a paralegal who handles civil litigation. Identify yourself as a student and ask if you can have a few minutes of this person's time. Explain that you are completing an assignment to ask this paralegal some basic questions about civil practice. For instance, ask the paralegal what he or she likes and dislikes about civil practice. Ask this person about the biggest misconceptions about working for a law office. If this person could give one piece of advice to a paralegal student, what would it be? Follow up with any other questions you think are appropriate. You will often be surprised at how helpful practicing paralegals are to students. After all, they were once in the same position.
