On April 6, 2006, Manny is driving home and fails to pay attention to the upcoming intersection. He applies his brakes too late and rear-ends the car in front of him. The driver, Earl, gets out of his car, rushes to Manny's car, and strikes him in the face. Natasha, who is standing at the intersection, sees the entire incident. She has an irrational fear of violence and especially of blood, and when she sees Manny's nose bleeding, she passes out, striking her head on the ground and suffering a concussion. When the police arrive, they cite Manny for following too closely and Earl for battery. Earl claims that he has severe pain in his neck and is transported to the hospital, where he incurs $3,256 in medical bills. Manny is also taken to the hospital, where medical personnel discover that his nose is broken. He undergoes surgery to repair it. The bill for his medical treatment is $4,590. Earl is behind on his child support payments, for a total of $11,435, and his ex-wife, Myra, learns that he has hired an attorney who is drafting a complaint against Manny based on the accident.
