Objective: To experience and/or observe and assess listening skills.

Select an option and set up for the role play.
Options: A. One person tells his or her good news to one other person as the class observes.
B. Break into groups of 6 to 8. One person tells his or her good news to one other person as the other group members observe.
Tell the other person your good news as though it just happened.
Assess the listening skills below by giving specific examples of how the person did or did not do a good job of listening.
• What level of listening did he or she use (marginal, evaluative, or projective)? Explain.
• Was the person an empathic listener? Explain.
Assess the listener on the 13 active projective listening tips:
Turn to the tips on pages 162-163 and assess the person on each of the 13 tips, with examples of what was done well and what could be improved.
• Which response styles did the listener use (advising, diverting, probing, reassuring, or reflecting)?
Conclusion: The instructor leads a class discussion and/or makes concluding remarks.
Application: (2- 4 minutes): What did I learn from this experience? How will I use this knowledge in the future?
