Early in earth's history, the planet went through many cycles of heating and cooling. During the heat cycle, water trapped in the earth's minerals was liberated and evaporated. As the water vapor rose in the atmosphere and cooled, it formed liquid water that rained back upon the earth and formed the oceans.
