Marine plants are tolerant of high salts in their environment, but they also can exclude salts, secrete salts, or store salts. Aerenchyme allows the distribution of air or oxygen to parts of the plant that are submerged in anoxic sediments. To various degrees, water currents assume the role of air currents and animals in dispersal of pollen, seeds, and propagules of marine plants.
