Hagman, L.W. (2004). New Mexico nurses' cultural self-efficacy: A pilot study. Journal of Cultural Diversity, 11(4), 146-149.
This study administered a written questionnaire to 15 registered nurses caring for multiethnic patients in New Mexico. They found that the nurses were moderately confident with their cultural knowledge and skills. Because of the small sample, no conclusions could be drawn from the study. Researchers recommended larger; more rigorous studies.
Jackson, A. K. (2007). Cultural competence in health visiting practice: A baseline survey. Community Practitioner, 80(2), 17-22.
The researcher administered a survey to explore the beliefs, knowledge, and practice in cultural competence of health visitors working in a county in England. Half the respondents were members of a minority ethnic community, most of Caribbean origin. Results showed a significant difference in respondents' abilities to meet the needs of minority ethnic communities as opposed to those of the white population. They identified language and culture, but not racism, as barriers to culturally competent care. The study concluded that there is a need for cultural competence training.
Broome, B. (2006). Culture 101. Urologic Nursing, 26(6), 486-489.
This author states that America is a mix of cultures, ethnic groups, and races; therefore, healthcare providers need to become more culturally sensitive and competent. She states further that one of the many challenges confronting urologic nurses is learning how culture can influence a patient's response to health and illness.
Suppose you are a nurse on a urology unit that serves mainly European Americans, Mexican Americans, and patients of Caribbean origin. You are trying to answer this question: Would knowledge of patients' cultural values and practices enable nurses on our unit to provide care that better meets the needs of our patients, for example, by improving their compliance with treatment regimens? You are looking for the best available research evidence to support your practice. Answer the following questions:
