The mood disturbances often experienced by the youthful offender who has suffered from abuse and neglect can also impact the cycle and expression of violence.Children who experience depression anxiety post-traumatic stress and the like often have a difficult time controlling aggressive displays and are more prone to anger; therefore they are more likely to carry out criminal behaviors Viljoen Elkovitch & Ullman 2008).Viljoen Elkovitch and Ullman 2008)list several areas of positive behaviors and actions that can mitigate the potential for criminal behavior as: pro-social attitudes intelligence and resilient personality traits.High self-efficacy and resilience are cited as strong indicators that a youth may not carry on the cycle of violence.These traits can act as protective factors against violence for children exposed to traumatic circumstances.
