The major difference between unfractionated heparin (UH) and low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) is related to the:
1. Size of the molecules-UH is a large molecule compared with LMWH.
2. Source of the drug-UH is derived from bovine lungs and LMWH is derived from pig intestines.
3. Testing of effectiveness-Serum levels of LMWH must be done every 2 days during therapy.
4. Route of administration-LMWH cannot be administered subcutaneously.
