Deck 1: Introduction to Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice
1
Describe the use of evidence-based guidelines in implementing evidence-based practice.
Evidence based guidelines are formed on the basis of availability of strongest research evidence. These are strict clinical guidelines which are kept in mind during practice of nursing. These guidelines are made by researchers and clinical experts. They are made by keep such things like design, content and many more in mind.
The content of guidelines must be accurate providing the best information. This help in taking good decisions during the practice. These guidelines assist the experts in building best research evidence. Heathcare outcome must be beneficial to the patients.
These guidelines are in form of recommendations. They are of great use to the practitioners and patients. They inform about proper health care for specific circumstances. Medical literature is described in the guidelines. Diagnose and treatments of diseases are mentioned in the guidelines.
2
Identify your role in research as a professional nurse.
Many researchers, scientists, clinical experts are involved in research studies. Adding to this, professional nurses also contribute and participate in research activities. They can also be called as research developers.
They obtain the knowledge from their own research study which is required during the nursing practice. Some of them uses the research study of some other researcher and uses that information as a source of knowledge. This knowledge is used by them in improving their nursing practice.
The role of nurses in the field of research has been explained by AACN (American association of critical-care nurses) and ANA (American nurses association). According to them, every nurse has some in build advanced education and this education expands with time. They are assisted with guidelines, protocols and policies during the nursing practice.
3
Define research, nursing research, and evidence-based practice.
The meaning of the word research is "careful examination" or "to search again". A systemic, diligent study or inquiry which helps in refining and validation of the existing knowledge or development of new knowledge is called research.
Persistence, organization and planning are indicated by systemic, diligent study. Development of an empirical body of knowledge for a profession or discipline, like nursing, is the mail goal of research.
Determination of the relevant knowledge which is needed by nurses is required to define nursing research. Nursing, being a practice profession, requires research for refining and development of knowledge. This knowledge can be used by nurses for promoting quality outcomes and improving clinical practice.
Knowledge about nursing administration, characteristics of nurses, nursing education, nursing roles and healthcare services is generated by nursing research. Thus, the research that has a direct or indirect influence on nursing practice is called nursing research. It is essential for building of an evidence-based practice (EBP) for nursing.
The ultimate nursing goal is an EBP. EBP helps in promotion of cost-effective, safe and quality outcomes for families, healthcare system, patients and healthcare providers. The evolution of EBP occurs from the integration of the clinical expertise, and the needs and values of the patients with the best research evide0nce.
EBP is the application of the unique combination of best research evidence by expert nurse clinicians. It enables the provision of cost-effective, safe and quality care to a patient and his family. It encourages families and patients to take an active role in health management.
