Case scenario 1:
Person X's grandfather is constantly ill and grandmother takes care of him. Currently, Person X is worried about his grandmother because she forgets things. The previous day she left the gas stove on and went to the market. The doctor told that these symptoms are common in old age. Person X is not satisfied and does a research on the metal health of the elderly.
The following are the three statistics about mental health issues in old age:
• The Country A Psychological Association finds that there are less than 30 percent of the psychologists who have studied "Geropsychology", a course related to the old age health issues.
• The research findings of Country A Psychological Association state that more than 60 percent of the old age people do not receive treatment for mental illness.
• The research states that at least 70 percent psychologists are interested in studying Geropsychology.
The following are the reasons why old age people do not receive treatment for mental health issues:
• The society assumes that the symptoms of old age mental health are common. The society believes that it is the sign of normal old age.
• There is less number of specialists for treating old age mental health issues.
• The transportation of the patient is difficult.
• The elderly get treatment for physical ailments and the mental ailments are ignored.
Case scenario 2:
Person M wants to be a mental health professional. He comes to know that many mental health professionals face complaints against them.
The complaints are more in number against mental health professionals because of the following reasons:
• The psychological treatment is a steady process. The patients or families of the patient expect quick recovery. If the condition deteriorates instead of a recovery, the family may file a complaint.
• Not all the medicines give positive results in every patient. Patients will react to only a particular type of medicine. If the prescribed medicine does not yield results, the patients will complaint.
• If the mental health condition deteriorates due to medication, the mental health professionals are at risk.
Case scenario 3:
The Country A Psychological Association publishes guidelines to detect and treat mental disorders. Recently, many criticized the book.
The book was criticized for the following reasons:
• The content is not the outcome of a well-developed research.
• The behavior of the people has been over diagnosed. The book considers unhealthy habits as mental illness.
• The book considers some of the normal habits as mental illness such as eating in excess.
• The book prescribes drugs and the public may consume it without the direction of physician. This book leads to overtreatment.
Case scenario 4:
Person Y's grandmother lost her husband. She is not fine now and Person Y feels that she is depressed. He wants to know the mental diseases related to the elderly before visiting the doctor.
The following are the mental disorders in the old age people:
• The elderly suffer from depression and it can lead to dementia. The disease causes memory loss, stress, and lack of focus.
• Alzheimer's disease is common in elderly. There will be loss of memory because of the destruction of brain cells.
• Pseudo dementia occurs in the old age because of the effect of medication for different treatment.
