Deck 8: Digital Media
1
Describe six ways to transfer photos from a digital camera to a computer.
Digital camera
A digital camera is an electronic device which is used for creating the digital images of real objects. A digital camera lens focus on the light emitted from the object to the (Charged coupled device) CCD sensor.
CCD has large number of photosites whose numbers is regulated by the size of the CCD. Photosites are used for detecting the color and brightness of each pixel. Digital camera stores there images in memory cards. User can use any size of memory card according to his needs. It is very easy to transfer the digital images to the computer.
Transfer of images from digital camera to computer:
Digital camera provides a feature to delete the picture from the camera which user does not want. There are a lot of ways by which images can be transferred to the computer.
1. Card reader: Card reader is used for reading data which is contained into the memory card. User can connect a card reader to the computer with the help of USB port which are built into the computer system. For the transfer of images from camera to computer, user has to remove the memory card from the camera and has to insert it to the card reader and transfer images to computer.
2. Direct Cable Transfer: If IEEE 1394 port is available in user's computer then a data cable can be used to connect the computer to the camera to transfer photos. A FireWire port or an USB-a port are used for high transfer speed. USB-3 port provides high speed than USB-2 and USB-1 port.
3. Infrared port: An infrared beam is used by some camera that can beam the photos on the infrared port. By using infrared port, there is no need of data cables but it provides a very slow transfer of photos as compared to USB, FireWire ports.
4. Media Transfer: If CD's or optical Medias are used to store the data in camera then user can remove the CD or the other media from the camera and insert it to the computer.
5. Docking station: A docking system provides a simple way for connecting computer to peripherals. Docking system contains slots for cards. For transferring the photos of camera to the computer, the camera should be kept in the docking station.
6. Email: User can also transfer the images as an email attachment when photo is clicked from phone by using the internet connection. It will get stored into the attachment folder.
2
Give examples of time shifting, place shifting, and format shifting.
Time Shifting:
Time shifting is defined as a process of recording the broadcasts so that they can be viewed at a later time. TV programs are mostly time shifting by busy people for the purpose of viewing them later when they have time.
Digital video recorders are used for time shifting which use EPG (electronic program guide) for recording shows on a hard disk.
Examples of time shifting:
1. Recording of TV programs: TV programs can be recorded by peoples so that they can be viewed at a convenient time. DVR are used for recording TV programs which stores these programs on an external storage device.
2. Voice Mail: Voice mail is a program that is used by the user for transferring voice messages to another user over internet. Many cell phones also provide the voice mail facility. Voice mails get stored into the user's mailbox which can be viewed later.
3. Fax: Fax is the process of telephonic transmission of scanned images and text by a telephone which is connected to a printer. The document which the user wants to send is scanned with the help of a fax machine which converts it to a bitmap image. This bitmap is then transferred to the receiver. The receiver fax machine is responsible for converting the bitmap to the original data.
Place shifting:
Place shifting is defined as a process of storing a media on a device that can be accessed by another device.
Example of Place shifting:
1. Viewing the television programs by Wi-Fi equipped set-top box: place shifting is used by Wi-Fi equipped set-top box for the purpose of viewing the broadcast of the television. Wi-Fi Set top box is responsible for accessing the TV shows.
2. Home automation: It is used by the professional who has spent his lot of time in travelling. Place shifting allows them to access the data from their home's computer.
3. Place shifting is also used by people having second home that is vocation cottage on lake or mountain
Format Shifting:
Format shifting is the process of converting the format of media files to another file so that it can also be used on another device. Format shifting is done because sometime there may be a situation when the user wants to run a media file on another device.
Example of format shifting:
1. Extracting music files from the CD's and converting them to mp3 or wav or any supporting format.
2. Extracting Image files from the CD's or another external device and then converting them to jpeg or png pr gif or any other supporting format.
3
The process of converting analog video signals into digital format is referred to as video
The process of converting analog video signals into digital format is referred to as video . .
Process of converting analog video signal
Analog camcorders are used for capturing analog video. Analog videos are stored into the tapes which stores videos in the continuous tracks.
When user wants to transfer the analog video to the computer then the user have to convert the analog video to the digital video by the video capture process.
A video capture process requires capture device to capture video and conversion software to convert it into digital signal.
Therefore, the appropriate word to fill in the blank is capture.
