Deck 14: Point-Of-Care Collections
1
List 10 situations that can lead to problems in point-of-care testing.
The POCT (point-of-care testing) is also known as the bedside testing. It is described as the medical diagnostic testing, which is done near the place of care, at the time of care. It includes simple medical tests, which can be performed at the bedside of the patient.
The POCT is accomplished via the use of various handheld, transportable, and portable devices. The situations that can result in the problems in POCT are given as follows:
1. The collection of the wrong volume of specimen causes the problems in POCT.
2. Usage of outdated reagents while testing may lead to the problems in POCT.
3. During POCT, the incorrect recording of the results of the medical tests also causes the problems.
4. Misidentification of the patient also leads to problems in POCT.
5. The incorrect timing for performing the analytic procedure is also considered as the cause of problems in POCT.
6. The inappropriate use of calibrators and controls may cause the problems associated with POCT.
7. The mislabeling on the samples or specimens also affects the POCT procedure.
8. The inappropriate storage of the collected specimen can result in the problems in POCT.
9. The collection of blood sample before the puncture site gets dry interferes with the result of POCT.
10. The use of instruments with dead or weak battery also affects the POCT procedure.

For the following questions, select the one best answer. Which of the following is a blood electrolyte measured by point-of-care testing?

A) glucose
B) potassium
C) hemoglobin
D) insulin
POCT (point of care testing) is described as the medical testing, which is performed in the close proximity to the patient outside of the clinical laboratory where the patient is receiving care. The POCT results are used for making the clinical decisions. POCT tests include a pregnancy test, blood glucose, cardiac markers, hematology, and blood gas analysis.
Glucose is classified as a hexose and monosaccharide sugar. Insulin is a hormone, which is secreted by the pancreas. Hemoglobin is described as the iron-containing metalloprotein, which is found in the red blood cells and is responsible for the transport of gases.
Hence, the options a, c and d are incorrect.
The potassium is classified as an electrolyte, which helps in maintaining the blood pressure by countering the effects of the sodium. It is a blood electrolyte, which is measured by the POCT.

What blood electrolytes can be measured on point-of-care testing instruments?
The medical testing, which is performed in the close proximity to the patient outside of the clinical laboratory where the patient is receiving care is described as the POCT (point of care testing).
The POCT results are used for making the clinical decisions. POCT tests include a pregnancy test, blood glucose, cardiac markers, hematology, and blood gas analysis. During POCT, the Nova biomedical ultra-analyzer is used for blood gas analysis. The blood gas analysis also includes the measurement of partial pressure of carbon dioxide and oxygen.
In addition to blood gas analysis, the Nova biomedical ultra-analyzer is also used to measure the levels of the blood electrolytes such as calcium, sodium, chloride and potassium. The levels of lactate, magnesium, saturated oxygen, total bilirubin levels, hemoglobin, creatinine, and glucose can also be measured with the help of the same instrument while POCT.
