Deck 6: Personal Nutrition
1
Is it possible to meet nutritional requirements on a limited budget? Have you ever been in this situation? What would you recommend to someone who wanted to eat healthfully on $30 a week?
Being able to eat healthy on limited funds really depends on how limited those funds are. If someone had 30 bucks a week it would be very hard, but not impossible. You'd have to pay attention to what fruits and vegetables are in season, because those are cheaper. Another thing to do is watch the grocery store flyers. You may have to make stops at more than one to make that little amount work to any extent. Even with all the work 30 dollars a week is really hard. At 50 dollars it would still not be the easiest but it would work better.

A) Maintain intake of added sugars.
B) Decrease consumption of olive oil.
C) Control calorie intake to manage body weight.

A) Maintain intake of added sugars.
B) Decrease consumption of olive oil.
C) Control calorie intake to manage body weight.
D) Eat dessert no more than three days a week.
Consider the following statements and think if they would be in something like a national dietary book with guidelines.
(a)The guidelines would suggest keeping added sugars down, not maintain an uptake.
Therefore(a)is proven false.
(b)There is most likely no mention of olive oil in dietary guidelines except saying that it is healthier than vegetable shortening or some other oils for cooking.
Therefore(b)is false.
(c)The guidelines do speak plenty about watching calories so that weight and fat is not gained. Controlling calories is important to staying healthy.
Therefore(c)is correct.
(d)Dietary guidelines generally suggest limiting sweets. Three days in a week would be considered too much.
Therefore(d)is false.

Consider the number of times a week you eat fast food. How much money would you have saved if you had eaten home-prepared meals? Which fast foods could you have selected that would have provided more nutritional value?
Unfortunately, one of the draws of fast food is that it is cheap. Almost every fast food restaurant has a dollar menu with items from a dollar to two dollars. Many meals can be had for less than five dollars. The average home cooked meal will fall between 5 and 10 dollars. The dollar menu is some of the worst items nutritionally. Fast food does have better items since many of them carry salads and chicken. Cheaper home cooked options include foods such as pasta.
