Compare Allport's concept of the proprium to Rogers's concept of the self.
Allport defined the proprium as behaviors and traits that are key, central or important to a person; it is our sense of our true "self," who we really are.Rogers's organismic self is similar to this idea because it is the true self and an accurate perception of our experiences.Rogers's self-concept is similar to this idea also because self-concept is our perception of ourselves. However, Rogers also discussed the possibility that we sometimes view ourselves inaccurately, i.e., we have an inaccurate self-concept.

What is functional autonomy? Find an example of propriate functional autonomy in the case.
Functional autonomy occurs when a behavior continues even after the original motivation for it is removed. In other words, there is a change in motivation, sometimes from something extrinsic to something intrinsic. An example of this is Grace trying scrapbooking even though she wasn't interested in it and then finding out that she liked it.She continues to scrapbook even though the group she joined to scrapbook with has disbanded. This is an example of propriate functional autonomy because she is scrapbooking very important experiences of her life that are part of her proprium. The scrapbooking also is motivated by Grace's widowhood, a core feature of her proprium.Likewise, the family life she is documenting must be a core feature of her proprium.

How does Allport's propriate striving compare to Jung's concept of self-realization? To Maslow's concept of actualization? To Rogers's concept of actualization?
Allport's concept of propriate striving is that aspect of the self that allows us to move toward growth.Jung's self-realization, Maslow's actualization, and Rogers's actualization, are all similar concepts in that they all address the concept of growth also. However, for Jung, this growth was a matter of becoming a well-rounded person, a matter of embracing all sides of our personality. For Maslow, actualization was becoming as much as we could. And for Rogers actualization was becoming who we really are instead of who others want us to be.
