How are slate tile roofs built?
Slate tile is usually applied over solid sheathing covered with an asphalt-saturated roofing felt underlayment. Codes require double underlayment for roofs with less than 4:12 slopes. The material is fastened with large-head copper nails, with each course of slate covering the joints in the course below it. Plastic cement is applied over joints to be covered. Each slate must have at least two fasteners. Slates are laid in the same manner as other shingles. The exposed ends may be in even rows or laid in a random edge. Hips and ridges cannot be nailed and are held in place with a waterproof elastic slater's cement that is colored to match the slate.
