What are counterweights?
Counterweights are stacked plates that slide on vertical steel guides. As an elevator rises, they lower, and as the elevator lowers, they rise. Counterweights generally equal the weight of the unloaded car and hoisting wires plus a percentage of the load capacity of the elevator. Since they rely on gravity, they help raise the car, thus reducing the overall power required.
3
Describe observation elevators.
Observation elevators move up a hoistway secured to the exterior of a building. Cars are designed with glass walls to provide panoramic views of surrounding areas as the elevator rises. The elevators may be geared, gear less, or hydraulic, and the hoisting machinery is hidden. The lower end of the hoistway (at the ground) must be enclosed with a safety barrier. As with all circulation systems, elevators doors and cars must be large enough to accommodate wheelchair use.
