Deck 11: Clay Brick and Tile
1
Briefly describe the properties and uses of firebrick.
Firebricks are made from special clays containing alumina-silica with traces of iron oxide, and alkalis that are very uniform in structure and therefore able to withstand high temperatures. Firebricks are generally larger than other structural bricks and are often hand molded. They find use in fireplaces, chimneys and kiln construction.
2
Briefly describe the properties and uses of brick pavers.
Brick pavers are solid clay units whose selection is based on weather resistance, abrasion resistance, and appearance relating to bond patterns, size and tolerances. Pavers come in two thicknesses: 1-½ in., commonly used for pedestrian situations, and 2 -1/4 in. for heavier traffic/load conditions.
