Deck 10: Patient Education and Patient-Centered Care in Professional Nursing Practice
1
One recent change on some nursing units has been the establishment of walking rounds to patient rooms during change of shift report. Using this model, the nurses, patient, and family members (if the patient wishes) are all involved in the exchange of information during the transition of care to the nurse coming on shift. Can you think of any other changes that you have observed in the healthcare setting that help to facilitate a PCC environment?
One other change that I have observed in the healthcare setting to facilitate a patient-centered care (PCC) environment is the implementation of bedside shift reporting. This practice involves the outgoing and incoming nurses discussing the patient's care and treatment plan at the patient's bedside, allowing the patient to be actively involved in the conversation and ask any questions they may have. This not only promotes transparency and open communication between the healthcare team and the patient, but also empowers the patient to be an active participant in their own care. Additionally, I have seen the use of patient and family advisory councils, where patients and their family members are invited to provide feedback and input on hospital policies, procedures, and the overall patient experience. This helps to ensure that the healthcare facility is meeting the needs and preferences of the patients and their families, further promoting a patient-centered approach to care.

Think about your own life. Do you act to prevent a disease or accident when you perceive that you are not susceptible to the disease or at risk for the accident?
No, I do not act to prevent a disease or accident when I perceive that I am not susceptible to the disease or at risk for the accident. I believe that prevention measures are only necessary when there is a real threat or likelihood of something happening. However, I do understand the importance of taking precautions and being proactive in maintaining good health and safety, regardless of perceived susceptibility. It's important to remember that accidents and diseases can happen to anyone, and taking preventive measures can help minimize the risk.

Have you ever been assigned to read a book that had so many big words in it that you had to keep the dictionary by your side? If it was assigned for school, you probably struggled through it for the sake of not failing the test, but what about if you were not being graded? Would you bother to read it? If you did read it because you knew it would help you, would you have enough understanding to actually apply the information?
Yes, I have been assigned to read books with many big words that required me to keep a dictionary by my side. When it was assigned for school, I struggled through it to avoid failing the test. However, if I were not being graded, I probably would not bother to read it. If I did read it because I knew it would help me, I may not have had enough understanding to apply the information effectively. The use of big words can make a book challenging to read and understand, and without the motivation of a grade, it can be difficult to stay engaged and motivated to fully comprehend and apply the information.
