Examples of knowledge and skills would include: for a public health nurse having knowledge of communicable/infectious diseases and injury epidemiology; theories related to population health response, disaster planning, implementation, and evaluation; understanding of policy influence on health responses and population health challenges; skills related to health surveillance and population-based health promotion interventions.

-Complete baccalaureate degree and entry-to-practice licensure exam. Review CASN Public Health Nursing Entry-to-Practice Competencies, if choosing PHN and Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice. Identify mentors and role-models who can provide guidance for tendering the chosen role and/or specialization. Seek learning opportunities and clinical placements that are closely related to the areas of specialization. Skill sets and theoretical knowledge to be reviewed is dependent upon the nursing role or specialization chosen. Seek out, join, and actively participant in nursing specialty professional organizations.
