Additionally, the formation of carbon-rich sediments and fossil fuels over millions of years removed carbon from the atmosphere and stored it in the Earth's crust, further reducing the greenhouse effect and lowering surface temperatures.

However, the increase in the greenhouse effect due to the addition of carbon dioxide from fossil fuel combustion is "too much of a good thing" because it disrupts the delicate balance that has been established over millions of years.
