Huggins, a dentist, was staying at the Ritz Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee, where he had a suite. When he went into the bathroom to shave, he flipped the light switch on the wall. When he did, he received a tremendous jolt that threw him into the door frame, causing permanent injury to his right shoulder. He sued the hotel for negligence for failure to maintain electrical fixtures in a reasonably safe condition. The essence of his claim was that he could no longer work at his profession.
