What do you think the "hot topics" of cognitive psychology are, based on what you have seen or heard in the media? Hint: Look for stories such as the following: "Scientists Race to Find Memory Loss Cure"; "Defendant Says He Can't Remember What Happened."
Explanation
Cognitive Psychology is defined as the scientific study of mental processes, which includes attention, memory, problem solving, perception, thinking and language use. It focuses on the way people process the information and the behavioral response. Many psychologists have developed influential theories and approaches on cognitive psychology and the nature of human mind. Many approaches helped to understand the ways, how the mental phenomena of humans have been replicated in the machines, such as computers.
Cognitive psychology tells about how our mind responds, when a stimuli is presented. It includes how we respond to images we see or sound we hear and what is the relation between the stimuli in the environment and the human behavior. Some of the hot topics of cognitive psychology seen and heard from media recently are given as follows:
Depression - It has been caused due to many reasons, such as work pressure, conflicts at home, sleep deprivation and mental illness. Depression results in less ability to take in information quickly and efficiently. Also, they often feel like they could not focus on a particular thing and may result in misunderstanding at work, home or other places. Driving becomes more dangerous for people with depression. Due to lack of concentration, there will be very less ability to remember specific things. Psychotherapy, medication or other treatments can help reduce depression in a person.
Memory Loss - Depression is one of the causes for memory loss. Due to lack of concentration on new things or subjects, the depressed people often suffer from memory loss. Other cause for memory loss would be Alzheimer's disease. It may result in mild to serious forgetfulness. Psychologists have found a treatment for memory loss by providing pacemaker for the brain. Using deep brain stimulation, scientists have found that pushing the electrodes into the brain and stimulating it with electric current can improve the memory capacity of a person.
Thought - One of the psychologists found that putting extra effort on the cognitive mental control will affect the normal activities. The psychologists call our skills as automatic actions until we put more effort on our cognitive mental control. Once a person masters something, there is no need to think too much on it. More cognitive control and extra knowledge and thought over any subject will not allow us to perform well on that subject.
Creativity - According to one psychologist, people who are doing exercise regularly will be better at creative thinking. The physical movement enhances the ability to think flexibly. Thus, according to the psychologist, exercise acts as a cognitive enhancer, which increases the creative thinking. There is a saying - Healthy body, Sound mind.
