You may have heard the term "personality clash" before. What does this mean and how can this be avoided?
Explanation
M is a fresh 22-year-old graduate who has joined her first corporate job at a bank. She has been working on an important project with a diverse set of six people, some of whom are quite senior to her. Most of the members on the team have similar levels of education and higher levels of seniority. However, there are problems related to the productivity of the team. M is of the opinion that her teammates are not motivated or professional enough but she is hesitant to say so given her lack of experience and seniority.
M is upset since she feels like she is on a team that will not be able to give good output or finish their assignment satisfactorily or on time.
She feels that two of her teammates are slacking off and not taking work seriously. But just because they are late to meetings does not automatically imply that they are disinterested. They might have workload or unprecedented issues in their module.
Two more are more interested in socializing. This may simply be a case of collaborative working styles. It is important to note that the culture of the bank is also important here since they are older employees.
One is not ready to commit to the pace the project demands in order to be finished on time. Again, the fact that he is reluctant to draw conclusions from the data may simply be due to the fact that the data is not straightforward.
M is a task oriented person and wants to work well and fast and move on to other projects. She is also highly driven since it is her first assignment in the bank and her first real corporate job. The differences in working styles may be due to a range of factors like company culture, age, nature of job profile etc. The difference in enthusiasm can also be chalked up to the fact that M is a fresh graduate. She is expected to be the most enthusiastic and energetic in the team.
