In slash-and-burn agriculture, which is common in many tropical countries, forests are cut and burned, and crops are planted in the cutover areas. Yields are usually good in the first year but decrease quickly thereafter. Why should this be? Compare your ideas with those of Tiessen et al. (1994), and evaluate the sustainability of slash-and-burn agriculture.
