Bdelloid rotifers are microscopic protists that live in freshwater and moist soil habitats ( Fig. ). Every member of the 370 species is female. Without males for sexual reproduction, these animals have surprisingly evolved into different species and inhabited different habitats. How do they generate the genetic variation for natural selection to act on?
