The aspen leaf miner is an insect pest of quaking aspen trees. In the spring, eggs hatch into small, wormlike larvae that bore into the leaf and start to feed on, or mine, the mesophyll tissue. The leaf miner snakes through the leaf ( Fig. ) and causes leaves to prematurely dry up and drop from the tree. Explain how plant growth will be directly affected by the leaf miner. How will leaf miner damage alter the size of wood cells appearing in the tree's spring- and summerwood? Will the annual growth ring be wide or narrow?
