Ten-year-old Madison was riding the brand-new scooter she received from her parents as a birthday gift. Going down a rather steep hill, Madison could not maneuver the scooter around the curve at the base of the hill and side-swiped a tree. Her parents rushed her to the emergency department, where she was treated and sent home with instructions for her care, including a medication for pain. Her parents gave her the acetaminophen every 3 to 4 hours, but it was not adequately addressing her pain. The physician from the emergency department did not want the parents to administer any other medication because it could mask further symptoms.
