Use your critical-thinking skills to answer the questions that follow the case study.
You have recently graduated from a two-year medical assistant program, have earned certification, and want to apply for the following advertised positions: (1) a CMA in a pediatrics clinic and (2) a CMA/receptionist for a physician in private practice.

The relationship between cleanliness and disease has been established, over time, within the medical community. Despite the conclusive evidence that "germs" cause disease and clean hands help stop the spread of germs, a recent study suggests that many doctors and other health care practitioners are not as careful as they should be to wash hands between patient contacts. In one intensive care unit surveyed, only about 17 percent of physicians complied with the recommended regimen, which includes lathering hands with germicidal soap, rinsing twice for at least 30 seconds, then thorough drying.
Studies have revealed that 20,000 people die each year in the United States as the result of infections contracted in hospitals. Hand-washing alone won't solve the problem, but hand-to-hand and glove-to-glove contact between health care provider and patient is still a major route of disease transmission.
Some hospitals and other medical facilities are suggesting that patients remind doctors, nurses, and other health care practitioners to wash their hands before beginning an examination or treatment.
