Don Lundy, EMS Director for Charleston County, South Carolina, says that DNR requests continue to be an ethical issue for EMTs. "The legal question has been answered," Lundy says, "but is it right or wrong [for EMTs] to support a DNR?" Most EMTs, Lundy explains, "would rather do too much than not enough."
EMTs reach the hospital with a patient who then arrests. The patient has been hospitalized before, and a DNR order is in place. The patient is middle-aged, and when his family arrives his wife says, "I don't care what he says. Do everything to keep him alive." As a health care practitioner on the team assigned to care for this patient, what will you do?
