Exercise 17
The following is a paraphrase of often stated comments on organizational changes.
It was not long after the computer business got going that titles proliferated. Soon you could give yourself any title you wanted, especially in the computer business. Often, instead of a raise, employees were offered a fancy new title. The whole thing was compounded by the cultural shift in America from a blue-collar attitude to a white-collar attitude. Clerks became sales associates. Secretaries became administrative assistants. It was in the 1970s when chief this-and-that began to emerge, along with the feel-good titles-the beginnings of political correctness and an era of sensitivity. It was also in the 1970s that women seriously began to use Ms. rather than Miss or Mrs. because of the perceived humiliation of being pigeonholed by marital status.
Do you think this explains the organizational changes that have taken place since the 1970s? Explain.
