(a) A central mainframe computer works with a number of dumb teiminals (that is, machines consisting of a display and a keyboard, used only to input data into the mainframe and read results from the mainframe). The mainframe and the terminals are located in the same building.
(b) A computer in a branch of a business needs to communicate continuously with head office.
(c) A computer in a branch of a business needs to report once a day for about an hour.
(d) Many offices of an international organization need to communicate with each other on a sporadic basis.
(e) Ten computers on a college campus need to communicate with each other on an occasional basis to send large data files.
