Vanderbilt is among a few American universities that acknowledge actively recruiting Jewish students for admission. About 4 percent of Vanderbilt's students are Jewish, as compared with more than 20 percent at Ivy League schools. About 2 percent of the national population is Jewish. Gordon Gee, a Mormon and the Vanderbilt chancellor, has applauded the ability and liveliness of Jewish students and the contribution they make to campus intellectual life. Assistant to the provost at Vanderbilt David Davis explained, "We want the best students to come to Vanderbilt. Jews score well on the SAT." Last year's college-bound Jewish seniors averaged 1,161 out of a possible 1,600 on the SAT, second only to Unitarians (1,209) among 35 religions while the national average was 1,020. Vanderbilt characterizes its Jewish recruitment effort as part of a broader diversity strategy. In targeting Jews for special recruitment efforts, are Vanderbilt and other universities engaging in a form of profiling or stereotyping that amounts to discrimination Explain.
