You were recently invited to serve on the board of the Eastman Health Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides various funds and services to area health agencies and hospitals. At this point in your career, serving on the board of a high-profile organization like this one would be a great career enhancer, so you readily accepted the invitation.
But now the foundation's executives want you to organize and lead their major fundraiser for the year, a silent auction. When the board discussed fundraising ideas, you enthusiastically supported this one-but you have neither the time nor inclination to be in charge of it.
Figure out how to say no while also showing that your support for the organization is genuine. Maybe some kind of counteroffer will help.
