The next time you say to yourself, "Who does this speed demon behind me think he is, Richard Petty" you may be right. In 1996 race car driver Richard Petty was fined $65 and assessed 4 points against his North Carolina driver's license for "bumping" a car that he was tailgating at over 70 mph. In August, 1997, In Orlando, Florida, a 21-year-old man was sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted of attempted murder. In this case of road rage, the convicted man shot and nearly killed a person who was pushing his stalled car off a main road. Apparently he was upset at being delayed by the stalled car. In January, 1999, a 40-year-old truck driver stuck in a massive traffic jam reportedly took out his road rage against the car in front of him. The Tulsa, Oklahoma, trucker was arrested for ramming his rig ten times into the woman's nearby car. She finally found a safe area and called police on her cell phone. More recently, two New Jersey male drivers face criminal charges in the death of a woman who was a passenger in one of the cars. In this road rage incident, one driver cut off the path of the other. Then a dangerous high speed chase ensued. Eventually one of the cars veered off the road and crashed, killing the woman.
