Exercise 3
There are three major rock classifications: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphi
c. The most common rock-type in the earth's crust is solidified from magma, welling up from the earth's interior. These rocks are classed as igneous (from igni, the Latin word for fire). Particles of rock loosened by wind, water, ice, and other weathering forces are carried downhill or downstream until they come to rest again in a new location. Deposited material that remains in place long enough, or is covered with enough material to compact it, may once again become rock. This type of rock is called sedimentary. Preexisting rocks can be modified by heat, pressure, and chemical agents to create new forms called metamorphic rock.
