Focus on Small Business: D.J. Haverkamp
D.J. (Dennis John) Haverkamp caught the beekeeping bug when, as a child growing up on a Kansas dairy farm, he watched feral bees coming and going from a hollow in a tree. Since he graduated from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. with a BS in horticulture, he has worked in his field for various organizations, including the Marriott Corporation, Columbia University, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He is currently employed full time as an estate manager in Westchester County, New York, about 40 miles north of New York City.
He got the idea for creating a beekeeping service when friends offered to pay him to "bee-sit" their hives. "If they pay me to take care of their bees... maybe somebody else would... too," he thought. 2 Soon, he was tending eight hives and as word spread through his neighborhood more and more people requested his services. Today he cares for more than 40 customers and nearly 80 hives. "I've had to turn people away," he said. Despite serving only locations that are within 30 miles of his base, the demand is greater than one person can meet.
As one opportunity always leads to others, D.J. came up with the idea that, given the demand for his service, perhaps there were people who would like to keep their own honey bees but did not even know how to start. He made an arrangement with the John Jay Homestead Historic Site (a small New York State museum) to offer classes in beekeeping. This has proved so popular that he now offers a series of two-week courses at two separate locations throughout the summer. 3
Still, D.J. maintains that beekeeping and beekeeping schools are strictly a part-time business for him. "Bedford Bee Honeybee Service is a small side business and education project I have been developing over the past few years. A hobby that has grown legs if you will. The service provides education, support and supplies to beekeepers and the general public in the Westchester and Fairfield county areas," he wrote on his LinkedIn page in March 2016. 4
