Building a Personal Network That Enhances Your Power
After your first six months at a public accounting firm, you are starting to see it will be very difficult to stand out until you really know the ropes and feel more connected, like all of your more senior associates. All but one of your colleagues at work have been at the firm for more than five years. Your fear is you will always be seen as a newbie around the firm. You also know you will have a far better chance of getting things done and moving up if you have a network of people within and outside the firm who mentor, coach, and support you. You are not really willing, however, to wait five years for that to happen. Where would you start in your attempt to get more connected? What specific ways would make people want to be associated with you? How would you go about building a network?
