Combine each pair of simple sentences into one sentence by using the opener shown at the left and omitting repeated words. Use a comma to set off the opener from the rest of the sentence.
EXAMPLE
• The toaster refused to pop up.
• It buzzed like an angry hornet.
Buzzing like an angry hornet, the toaster refused to pop up
In 1980, the U.S. Olympic hockey team was determined to take the gold medal.
• It beat the Soviet team, which was rated the world's finest.
