1 America has provided the world with a flood of technology that has improved human life. 2 This is especially true for the twentieth century. 3 For example, the American industrialist Henry Ford set up an automobile assembly line, which made it possible to mass-produce automobiles that used interchangeable parts. 4 As a result, Ford was able to manufacture cars that everyday Americans could afford. 5 The Ford Motor Company is still in existence, selling cars all over the world. 6 The first successful flying machine was built by the Wright brothers who, in 1903, were able to keep their experimental plane flying for twelve seconds at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. 7 Today, the Boeing Company of Seattle, Washington, is one of two leading builders of jetliners in the world. 8 The transistor, which replaced vacuum tubes in radios and televisions and which led to the development of the personal computer, was developed by two American companies: Bell Labs and Texas Instruments. 9 A transistor is a device used to increase the power of electronic signals or for switching signals. 10 In 1942, Enrico Fermi, who had immigrated to America, and Leo Szilard worked on the Manhattan Project, which built the first atomic reactor. ^Eventually, this led to the development of the atomic bomb, which was dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. With the dawning of the atomic age, it was possible to make use of nuclear power for many peaceful purposes, such as the generation of electricity and the development of devices and treatments used in nuclear medicine. 13 I n the 1930s, a German, Konrad Zuse, invented the first programmable computer. 14 The computer we know today was largely the product of the work of scientists at several American companies and universities, including IBM, Remington Rand, and Harvard University.
