Identify three ways that water is used in the body.
Explanation
60% of the human body comprises of water. Thus, it is evident that water should play the maximum role in maintenance and regulation of the body.
The three ways in which water is used by the body are:
1. Hydration and lubrication
Water causes hydration of body tissues and lubricates joints. The simplest proof of this function is the moistening of eyes. Water keeps the eyes moist and prevent them from getting dry and prone to infection and other disorders.
2. Medium for temperature regulation
During hot weather or exercise, the sweat glands secrete fluid called sweat which oozes out of the pores of the skin and evaporates, dissipating heat from the body. Sweat mostly comprises of water. During cold weather, these sweat glands secrete less of sweat in order to retain heat within the body.
3. Chemical processes
All chemical processes in digestion are possible only in water. From the time the food is in the mouth, it is infused with water. In the mouth, water is mixed with the food in the form of saliva, in the stomach in the form of gastric juices, and in the intestine in the form of pancreatic and bile juices. Thus, water is an essential part of the chemical processes involved in digestion and absorption.
