Sail Smoothly or Rock the Boat?
Assume you have recently taken a new job as financial manager at a midsized pharmaceutical company. After working there just a few months, you sense the attitude of most employees at the company is "Who cares?" Salespeople don't turn in detailed expense reports for their travel, nor do they provide receipts to receive reimbursement for meals and other expenses, though the company operations manual says such documentation is required. You also notice employees readily help themselves to office supplies like pens, paper, printer cartridges, and staplers, with no questions asked.
At a meeting of the firm's executive committee you cite the many financial control flaws you have noted and suggest that the company toughen up on lax employee behavior. The CEO says, "My dad started this company twenty-eight years ago, and frankly this is the way it's always been. Probably the best thing we can do is not rock the boat." What will you do? What could result from your decision?
