Organizational Culture in the Classroomand Beyond Step 1. Write down the norms that you believe to beoperating in the following places: (1) in most of yourcourses, (2) in formal social groups such as fraternities andsororities, and (3) in student clubs or school-sponsoredorganizations. Use your personal experience in each placeand consider the norms. Some norms are implicit, so youmay have to think carefully to identify them. Other normsmay be explicit.
Step 2. After you have developed your lists, divide intogroups of four to six students to discuss norms. Each studentshould share with the group the norms identified foreach of the assigned places. Make a list of norms for eachplace and brainstorm with fellow group members to comeup with additional norms.
Step 3. Try to group the norms by common themes, andgive each group of norms a title. Decide as a group whichnorms are most important for regulating student behaviorin each location.
Step 4. As a group, analyze the source or origin of each ofthe more important norms. Does the norm originate in theenvironment, from a leader, or elsewhere? Can you findany examples of norms that are expressed but not followed,which means that people do not "walk the talk" of thenorms?
Step 5. What did you learn about cultural norms thatexist in organizations and social groups? How is it helpfulto make explicit those aspects of organization culture thatare typically implicit? Who should be responsible for settingnorms in your courses or in student social groups andorganizations?
