Patient Situation
Lani Ettinger is a 30-year-old woman, married, with three school-age children. She has just had a mastectomy (removal of a breast) because her biopsy was positive for cancer. The surgery was uncomplicated, the cancer was removed at an early stage, and she is expected to recover completely. As you are helping her prepare to leave the hospital, she begins crying.

Self-Knowledge: Suppose Lani tells you, "My husband has gone to get the car, but when he was here, he didn't want to hug me or kiss me. I asked him if he will still love me and he didn't say anything. He was crying when he left." What would your feelings be about the husband? You do not need to speculate on exactly what he meant; just imagine what your initial feelings would be.
