IHall, L, Doran, D., Pink, L. (2008). Outcomes of interventions to improve hospital nursing work environments. Journal of Nursing Administration, 38(I ), 40-46.
This study evaluated the effects of workplace change interventions on nurse and patient perceptions of work quality and work environment. The intervention was a workplace change designed to improve the availability of resources on patient care units (e.g., improving the linen supply, identifying basic equipment needs). The only statistically significant change after the intervention was that nurses had a more positive perception of work quality and the work environment. Based on data from patients, researchers speculate that nurses' satisfaction with work arrangements can influence patient care.
Hegge, M., Larson,V. (2008). Stressors and coping strategies !! of students in accelerated baccalaureate nursing programs. Nurse Educator, 33( I ), 26-30.
Students in six baccalaureate nursing programs reported their stress level, sources of stress, and coping strategies. Findings indicate that students experienced higher levels and more extended periods of stress than in prior life events. The most helpful coping categories, in order, included seeking social (emotional) support, turning to religion, trying to grow as a person, planning, and acceptance. Students recognized the stress of the nursing program, appraised it in light of previous experience, resolved to meet their academic goals, and used helpful coping strategies to promote positive learning outcomes.
Morgan, P., Fogel, J., Rose, L., et al. (2005).African American! couples merging strengths to successfully cope with breast cancer. Oncology Nursing Forum, 32(5), 979-987.
This qualitative study examined the process of coping with breast cancer among African American couples. The couples described the importance of combining their strengths and working together as a couple to cope with a breast cancer diagnosis. Authors recommended that nurses use this information to help couples work through a similar experience.
Recall the three approaches to coping and adaptation: altering the stressor, adapting to the stressor, and avoiding the stressor.
What ideas does each study give you for ways in which you might help Gloria and John (MeetYour Patients).
