Smith, K., Smith,V., Krugman, M., et al. (2005). Evaluating the i impact of computerized clinical documentation. CIN: Computers, Informatics, Nursing, 23(3), 132-138.
A computerized system for planning and documenting patient care was initiated, using the framework of Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) standardized languages. The software includes both order entry and a charting application. Staff surveys, observations, and chart audits were conducted before and after the computerized system was implemented. Data demonstrated that after the new system was implemented (I) staff attitudes toward computers were less positive, (2) the time required for charting was unchanged, and (3) nurses' charting entries were more complete and comprehensive.
Kossman, S., Scheidenhelm, S. (2008). Nurses' perceptions of the impact of electronic health records on work and patient outcomes. CIN: Computers, Informatics, Nursing, 26(2), 69-77.
This study addressed nurses' use of EHRs and their views of the impact of EHRs on job performance and patient outcomes. Questionnaires, interviews, and observation data from 46 nurses in medical-surgical and intensive care units at two community hospitals were collected and analyzed. Results indicated that nurses ( I ) preferred EHR to paper charts and were comfortable with technology; (2) thought use of EHR impaired critical thinking, decreased interdisciplinary communication, and created a high demand on work time (73% reported spending at least half their shift using the records); (3) believed that EHR improved organization, efficiency, and information access; and (4) thought the use of EHR enabled them to provide safer care but decreased the quality of care.
Which study disagrees with the statement that EHR improves communication between healthcare providers? What does the study say about that?
