Researchers examined the effect of an advanced practice nurse (APN) intervention on restrictive siderail usage in four urban nursing homes with a sample of 251 residents. A secondary question explored the association between restrictive siderail reduction and bed-related falls. They observed siderail use, and interviewed residents and nurses for functional status, mobility, cognition, and behavioral symptoms. They also reviewed the medical record for treatment information and incident reports for fall data. The intervention consisted of the APN consulting with individual residents and providing education and consultation for staff in the facility. Researchers concluded that APN consultation and education intervention can safely reduce siderail use, and that reducing siderail use does not lead to an increase in falls.

In this 4-year study, researchers sent questionnaires to staff nurses in five nursing homes in Sweden in order to identify falls risk factors for older adults living in nursing homes. They concluded that neither bed rails nor wheelchairs with safety belts eliminated falls, and that use of antidepressants increased the risk of falls.
