Deck 31: Interior Finishes, Paints and Coatings
1
Why is lead poisoning a concern in regard to older buildings and what are its symptoms?
Lead paint found in older buildings can poison construction workers doing remodeling or additions. Common symptoms of lead poisoning include stomach cramps, nausea, loss of appetite, headache, and joint and muscle aches.
2
What is the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute?
The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute is an example of a not-for-profit organization that oversees the GREENGUARD Certification Program. As an ANSI Accredited Standards Developer, GEI establishes acceptable indoor air standards for indoor products, environments, and buildings. GEI's mission is to improve public health and quality of life through programs that improve indoor air.
3
What are Styrene-butadiene coatings and how are they commonly used?
These water-based coatings are formulated using styrene and butadiene, producing a rubber-like film. They resist alkali well and are permeable to water vapor. Styrene-butadiene coatings are used as exterior fillers over porous concrete surfaces. Some formulations are used on interior masonry, plaster, and gypsum wallboard, producing a washable film that resists abrasion. They generally are not used on wood.
