Chemoprophylaxis is recommended for individuals who have been exposed to someone with active tuberculosis and who also have an increased risk of developing active TB themselves. This includes individuals with newly diagnosed HIV infection as they have a weakened immune system and are more susceptible to developing active tuberculosis. Clients with COPD or pulmonary fibrosis are not at increased risk for developing active TB solely because of those conditions. Clients with active tuberculosis would receive treatment for their active infection, not chemoprophylaxis.
